Welcome, PEMFellows.com / PEMNetwork.org Registered Users.  We begin production of PEMCast, the audio podcast for this site on September 2010.  And we'd like to invite you to join!

Do you have a voice you'd like to share?  A faculty or fellow colleague you'd recommend interviewing?  Or maybe just a question or topic for us to discuss on PEMCast.  Even a question you're too embarrassed to otherwise ask... for our ask-a-statistician.

What is it, and what do you do in the ED now?  Oh, by the way, your ENT specialist isn't calling back.

Last week's case was about an otherwise 4-week-old female with varicella, not transmitted from the mother (she also developed symptoms near the same time).  She was febrile to 39.1 and was otherwise well and tolerating po's.  There was a large patch of vesicles in the lumbar spine, so the decision was made to forego the LP.  She was admitted for 48 hours with ampicillin, cefotaxime, and acyclovir.  After negative cultures were confirmed, she was sent home on oral acyclovir and did very well.  Below is the poll response in 2009 for this case (without information about non-vertical transmission).
